Why executives still feel exhausted after time off
Why am I still exhausted after a vacation?
Time off can reduce the immediate load without necessarily changing the pattern that created it.
You took the vacation, slept in, mostly stayed off email, and came back with a tan or at least a change of scenery.
Three days later, you felt exactly as tired as before you left.
For executives operating under sustained pressure, exhaustion can build across several dimensions at once: physical, cognitive, and emotional. Stepping away can help. But stepping away and recovering aren't always the same thing.
One reason we see repeatedly is simple: performance demands change faster than recovery strategies do.
Why doesn't time off make me feel recovered?
Because the way you're recovering may no longer match the way you're performing.
The role gets bigger. Travel increases. Decisions carry more weight. The calendar becomes less forgiving. But the way you sleep, train, recover, switch off, and prepare for the next day often stays largely the same.
In our work with executives, we see this mismatch repeatedly. What worked when the demands were different doesn't necessarily work now.
You're trying to recover for the executive you were six months ago, not the one currently in the seat.
A week away can interrupt the load. It doesn't automatically recalibrate your recovery to what your performance now requires.
What if the way I'm recovering no longer works?
Then more of the same may not be the answer.
More sleep, another long weekend, a lighter week. All can help. But if your recovery strategy no longer matches the load you're carrying, simply adding more recovery time doesn't necessarily address the mismatch.
That's not necessarily a discipline problem. It's a readiness problem.
Recovery needs to evolve as performance demands evolve.
How do I recover when rest isn't enough?
Start by understanding what actually needs to recover.
Before adding another routine or simply trying to do less, you need an honest read on your current state: physically, cognitively, and emotionally.
Where is the load actually coming from? What isn't recovering? What has changed in the demands of your role? And is the way you're recovering still matched to the way you're performing?
Because recovery isn't just about doing less. It's about restoring what your performance is taking from you.
